In the summer of 2012 I went to visit the Bialowieza Forest in Poland which is the largest remaining part of the vast primeval forest that used to cover Europe. It is now protected by various legislations and is a wild unmanaged woodland with restricted access so it is a haven for wildlife. We saw bison and boar, deer and elk, a snake and so many birds. Birds considered rare in the UK were just hanging out in the village gardens and we saw woodpeckers everyday. Mainly the Great Spotted Woodpecker.
When I got home I decided to make a lino print of one of them.
Since making these prints and exhibiting them I have heard lots of lovely stories of people having one regularly in their garden, usually coming specially for the food on their bird tables.
